EMDR Therapy For PTSD & CPTSD

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a unique, powerful, body-based approach to help your brain process distressing memories so they no longer trigger an emotional storm in your present.

When Talking Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, no matter how much we talk through a difficult experience, the emotional sting stays the same. This is because traumatic or highly stressful memories are often stored in a way that is not fully accessible through language, but instead through emotions, body sensations and sensory triggers. When something reminds you of the event, the nervous system can react as if it is happening now.

EMDR is a NICE recommended, evidence based therapy designed to support the processing of traumatic memories. Unlike traditional talking therapies such as TF CBT, it does not rely on going over every detail verbally. Instead, it uses structured bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess how the memory is stored, so it feels less emotionally charged and less present in day to day life. Over time, the memory is still there, but it feels more distant, more integrated, and no longer pulls you back into the same emotional or physiological response.

How EMDR Helps You Process Trauma

Feeling safe and in control

EMDR works with both past experiences and present safety, and is always paced carefully so you feel grounded and able to pause or slow things down at any point.

Reducing emotional intensity

The memory is still there, but the emotional and physical response attached to it can gradually become less overwhelming over time.

Reprocessing what happened

EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences so they feel less present, less triggering, and more like something that belongs in the past.

Shifting how it is held

Over time, the memory becomes less threat based and more integrated, rather than something that continues to pull you back into the same response.

The Shifts After EMDR

The most common thing people say after EMDR is that the memory feels less emotionally charged. It no longer has the same intensity in the body or mind, and feels easier to think about without the same level of distress or activation.

Here is what that shift can look like:

  • Less emotional reactivity
Memories or reminders that once felt overwhelming begin to carry less emotional and physical charge, and the beliefs attached to them often start to soften over time.
  • Fewer triggers taking over your day
Things that used to set off strong emotional responses start to feel less consuming and less likely to pull you out of the present.
  • More internal space and clarity
When your system is no longer constantly reacting to the past, there is more room for present day thinking, decision making and everyday life.
  • More freedom in daily life
Situations, places or experiences that were once avoided often start to feel more manageable and possible again.
